Prompt
Purpose: To write an essay in which you create an original definition for an abstract term—love, history, friendship, civility, education—any abstract term you would like to choose—and to practice employing definition in conjunction with the organizing principles of division and classification.Remember what your textbook has to say on the subject of Division and Classification as organizing principals of composition:"A paper organized according to the principle of division breaks a topic into its components—its separate parts. A paper on the solar system might devote a section to each planet; a paper on a political candidate might describe her position on several major issues in an order that seems appropriate . . . . Classification involves breaking a large subject into categories according to some consistent and useful principle of division. Classification must follow rules that don’t apply to division. First, classifications must be exhaustive: every member of the class must fit into a category. Any principle of division you use must also be consistent. You can’t classify by more than one principle at a time—for example, if you group planets according to the number of moons they have and whether or not they have rings, you are not really classifying. [Several planets have no moons or rings.] Finally, classes must not overlap. That means you should be able to place an object in only one category."In short, choose an abstract term that you can easily divide and classify and then write a classification essay. Be sure to formulate a strong thesis, to define your terms, and to develop your essay with plenty of evidence to support that thesis while using classification as your organizing principle.Write your timed essay using a word processing program on a computer and formatted in MLA style. Submit your timed essay to me online through MyCompLab by cutting and pasting the document from the original and make sure to save a copy of your original for yourself. Remember, too, to copy and paste your prewriting notes to the end of the document that you submit.

Choose one topic from the two writing prompts below. Then write a timed essay (no more than an hour) in which you go through, as best you can, the stages of pre-writing, drafting, and brief revision. Be sure to employ an introductory and concluding technique and to position your thesis as the last sentence in your first paragraph. In the body of your essay, be sure to use an appropriate organizational strategy and to provide your readers with plenty of evidence to support your claims in each of your paragraphs. When you have finished, submit your work online to me through MyCompLab in this order: (1) complete draft of the essay formatted in MLA style and below it (2) your prewriting.
1. Make a short list of gifts people have presented to you over the years on special occasions like Christmas or your birthday. Reflect on two of these gifts that are particularly meaningful. Which of these gifts do you most value and why? What symbolic value do these gifts hold for the giver and the receiver? What does the gift represent? What cultural values would the object represent to a stranger who knows nothing about the history of the gift? If you could only pass on to someone else one of these two gifts, which one would choose and why? To whom would you give it? How would the symbolic value of the gift change, or would it?
Happy Birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, I didn’t know what to get you, so this will have to do.
This is a more realistic version of the classic birthday song, in all reality why don’t we just sing this every year? Why is shopping for a birthday, easter, or christmas present so difficult? In recent years I’ve received numerous gifts, some good, some bad, most of the time they weren’t exactly what I had asked for, or at other times they were what was delivered when nothing was asked for. It’s always interesting to see what the members if your family will get you un-prompted. But have you had the same feeling as I have when you open a gift and just for a split second think to yourself “Not even close.” Or the exact opposite reaction, “This is PERFECT”. Have you been that family member who’s gift didn’t fall on appericated hands?
In recent years I’ve received some gifts that I appericated; shoes, a subscription to a historical newspaper, a new cell phone. A stereo for the car I was driving at the time. A flask with a funnel for drinking on the go.
I’ve also received some gifts that I didn’t care for as much; hats on several occasions,

This is what I want; this is where you can find it; this is how much it costs. If only it were that simple.
“Pop quiz!” What kind of toy would your little sister like you to get her?
Happy birthday to you…Happy birthday to you… I didn’t know what to get you…So this will have to do.
It’s easter; you know what that means! The christians savior became a zombie! So it’s time to hide the eggs that we soaked in vinigar and food coloring, and bring on the chocolate

Prompted writing

Compare and contrast two meals you’ve eaten recently prepared by someone else; if you had to choose one of them to be your final meal which would you choose and why?

Recently I have had the pleasure of eating two very seperate meals; one prepared by the woman I am currently commited to. The other was prepared by a friend from work. Both were delicious and both were exactly what I wanted in a meal. However there were very distinct differences in these meals. One was prepared for her and I to enjoy together, the other was prepared by order of a third party. If I were given a choice to choose one of these meals to be my last I would choose the one prepared by my girlfriend. A meal is a meal when it is prepared for an individual, not when it's what the paper says.

The meals that were recently served to me were a Papa Murphys pepperoni pizza, and a Traditional (Bacon, Hashbrowns, Eggs, and toast) from Sharis resturant in Lewiston Idaho. Both of these meals were exactly what I wanted at the time, the pizza was cooked to a golden perfection, with the cheese melted and bubbling. Cut into ten slices of a greasy, cheesy mess. With a side of Vanilla Coke, thinking back on it makes me only want it all over again. The Traditional was served on a platter with the bacon arranged lengthwise still sizzling from the stove, the hashbrowns professionally placed in the middle of the plate. To the right of that were the eggs cooked over hard just as I had requested, and the sourdough toast with the butter melting before my eyes, I had a tall glass of pulp free orange juice to drink the perfect compliment to this feast. However as I began to consume this meal I noticed the eggs had been burnt to a chrisp on one side. I was a little disappointed with this, the cook behind this almost perfect meal; "Captin" Kirk Henry had made it for me dozens of times in the past without error. Not one to piss and moan about a minor error I still ate the entire meal. Eggs first, rolled up onto a piece of toast with strawberry jam, and a piece of bacon to set the whole thing straight hashbrowns next, heavily salted and peppered just how I like it. The burnt eggs seemed to melt away like an unplesent memory as I engorged myself on all this food. rising to my feet after the meal to stretch and feel the food settle, stuffed and happy.

If I were asked to choose between these two meals and make it my last, I would have to choose the pizza. Though it wasn't nearly as complex as the Traditional. There were no errors, I had good company to enjoy myself with, and I like to think that the simplier; the better.

In conclusion if I were given a choice between the two meals given above I would choose that prepared by the woman I'm commited to.

If I had to choose two of my friends to entrust the lives of myself and the members of my family I would choose my friend Mack Montez, and my friend Richard Godwin. I chose these individuals because they are the friends I have been able to keep the longest. I chose them for the quality of their character, and I chose them for their sake as well as my own. If I had to choose between Mack and Richard and entrust them with the lives of myself and my family I would have to choose Mack. I choose Mack simply because his head is the most firmly stuck on his shoulders.
Mack Montez, born Christmas eve 1989 has been part of my group of close friends since we were 4 years old, going to daycare at The Kid’s Playhouse. Since then he and I have established an incredible bond. Watching Mack grow from a small boy into the brilliant man he is today has been a continuing source of inspiration even to this day. Mack and I constantly give each other the advice we need, or the brutal truth as only a close friend can. From relationship advice to feuds with other friends Mack always knows just what to say in order for the situation to be resolved. By biting the bullet and breaking up with a girl who just isn’t right. To even saying we’ll wrestle this issue away. The male thought structure the tougher guy wins.
Richard Godwin, born: ten, ten, ninety as he distinctly puts it. Has been my spirit since we were first introduced, almost eleven years ago by our single parent mothers who were study buddies for a class at Walla Walla Community college. Which was our second encounter, Richard is a grade below me, and one day at Parkway elementary where we were both attending school. I saved him from a girl who had been chasing him. Looking back on it today if I were to try and do that he might kick my ass. It seems from day one we were Jay and Silent Bob, two characters from several movies directed by Kevin Smith. We were always running around telling each other everything we knew, making up games with anything and everything on hand. Richard and I have an understanding of each other that other than Mack I have yet to find. It’s not an uncommon occurrence for one of us to think about the other then shortly thereafter a phone rings, a car rolls into the driveway, or a letter arrives in the mail.
